0:34.1	Chad Green, a cryospheric scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, was flying a plane over an enormous glacier when all of a sudden his radar unexpectedly detected a hidden city under the ice, a city called Camp Century, a secret U.S. military research base built beneath the Greenland
0:57.7	ice sheet during the Cold War about 127 miles northeast of Bidufik Air Base, constructed between
1:05.8	1959 and 1960. It operated until 1967 and was designed as a demonstration of affordable Arctic outposts,
1:15.5	a test bed for construction techniques, and a hub for scientific research.
1:21.0	Publicly, it was portrayed as a scientific and engineering experiment, but its covert purpose
1:26.8	was to serve as a prototype for Project
1:30.2	Iceworm, a plan to deploy nuclear missiles hidden beneath the ice. Camp Century was built using
1:38.0	what's called a cut-and-cover trenching technique. Swiss made rotary snow plows known as Peterplows, carved deep trenches into the
1:46.8	ice, which were then covered with steel arches and top with snow for insulation and camouflage.
1:53.3	The camp consisted of a network of 21 to 26 tunnels stretching nearly two miles in total length.
2:01.9	These tunnels housed a variety of facilities, including living quarters for up to 200 soldiers
2:07.2	and scientists, a kitchen and cafeteria, a hospital and infirmary, a laundry area, a recreational
2:13.7	hall, a theater, a chapel, a barber shop, as well as scientific laboratories and
2:20.5	storage tanks. The camp was powered by a portable nuclear reactor, the first of its kind,
2:26.5	which provided electricity and heat for over three years before being decommissioned and
2:31.7	removed due to its structural instability in the reactor trench.
2:36.2	Fresh water was sourced by melting ancient ice via a deep stream well,
2:41.6	producing over 10,000 gallons daily.
