Taiwan History Part 7 today.

It had been just over 300 years since the adventurer's Dutch seafaring merchants

established their trading base in present-day Thailand.

And over the past six episodes, we've traced many of the historical milestones,

stretching from the Ming to the Qing.

And since 1895, Taiwan had been a colony of Japan.

We saw how there was no small amount of local resistance against the Japanese,

but the Taiwanese and indigenous people waged battles against them in fits and starts.

Many of them quite gruesome in the way the fighting was carried out.

Want to mention what followed when it was over.

So by 1930, those Taiwanese who had been openly defiant were either dead in prison

or sufficiently beaten down to the point where they bottled up their hatreds and moved on.

Japan by then only had 15 more years of colonial rule on Taiwan.

In 1930, if you told anyone in the Japanese imperial die at that in 15 years,

their nation would lie in smoking ruins.

No one would have believed you.

The ongoing development of Taiwan continued on unabated,

as if it would remain part of Japan forever.
