Summary

In this episode, we take a deep dive into the wild world of the Hawaiian silversword alliance. This group of daisy relatives represents one of the most remarkable adaptive radiations on the planet and is comprised of three genera: Wilkesia, Argyroxiphium, and Dubautia. From tiny cushion plants to woody trees and vines, these unique plants have done amazing things on the Hawaiian Archipelago. Even more amazing is the fact that all of them can trace their origins back to a single seed of a daisy relative called a tarweed growing in California. Against all odds, that seed made it across the Pacific and the rest, as they say, is history. Joining us to talk about that history is Dr. Bruce Baldwin, a professor at UC Berkeley and curator of the Jepson Herbarium. Dr. Baldwin has spent his career trying to unravel the evolutionary mysteries of this group and has made some important insights into the processes of evolution along the way. What's up? This is your host, Matt. Welcome to the show. How's everyone doing this week?

I've got something super special for you today because you're going to learn about how a group of

0:14.2

Daisy relatives native to California made it to Hawaii and became the amazing Silver Sword Alliance. You may have seen pictures

0:23.0

of the Hawaiian Silver Swords, but if you haven't, take a moment and look them up because they

0:27.5

are incredible looking plants, and you would never guess that they were related to the tar weeds

0:31.4

growing in California. But that's where people, like my guest today, come in. Joining us is

0:36.3

Dr. Bruce Baldwin.

0:42.6

He's a professor at UC Berkeley and also the curator of the Jepsener Bairium, and he has devoted most of his research career to understanding the evolution and diversification

0:47.2

of these incredible plants.

0:49.0

And I don't want to spoil any of it, but I'm just going to tell you what we talk about

0:52.8

today is incredible.

0:55.0

If you have any interest in biology, evolution, diversification, this is one heck of a conversation for you.

1:00.6

So let's just jump right into it. Without further ado, here's my conversation with Dr. Baldwin. I hope

1:05.5

you enjoy. I was just handling embryos of relatives of the Silver Sword right before you cooked in here.

1:24.7

That's awesome.

1:25.3

Growing up a lot of California tar weeds right now for a genomic study.

1:32.0

Very cool.

1:33.1

In gel culture or seed germination?

1:35.3

No, just seed germination, but sometimes they need to be coaxed out of their seeds.

1:41.2

And yeah, that has to be done with insect pins under dissecting scope.

1:44.7

They're pretty small.
