I'm Dr. Lisa Pressman and I'm here with Liz Kleinrock

who is an anti-bias educator and consultant based in LA.

She's also a published author with Teaching Tolerance, an organization that creates curricula for teachers.

Her work has gained national recognition through a mini-day that creates

a curriculum for teachers.

She received teaching tolerance

as 2018 Award for Excellence in Teaching and currently serves on the Teaching Tolerance Advisory Board.

Today we're focusing on overall ways to address taboo topics.

You know those topics where we're afraid to talk about them or we're

uncomfortable and so we don't feel confident that we even know what to say to our kids. And those topics usually fall into categories of race, gender,

sexuality, prejudice, and in an election year,

it's coming up even more. So I thought we could talk to Liz about her

wisdom and experience addressing taboo topics with students.

What do you recommend parents do to get comfortable bringing up difficult subjects with their kids?

Well, I think with any topic you are uncomfortable with, it's important to figure out why you're

uncomfortable with that first.

And when you start unpacking a lot of those feelings and opinions, certainly a lot of those feelings and opinions.

Certainly a lot of things can come up.

Often these things can be traced back to our own childhoods

and how the adults in our lives
