Summary

In Defense of Plants is now a book! Hitting shelves on February 23rd, "In Defense of Plants: An Exploration into the Wonder of Plants" explores my introduction to the world of botany and the amazing ways plants make a living. Instead of me just talking at you for an hour, I figured I should let someone else take the wheel for a bit so I invited my buddy Bill Michalek from The Field Guides Podcast to sit down and talk about the process of writing this book and our views on science communication in general. This podcast was produced in part by Margaret, Mary, Connor, Nathan, Jan, Jerome, Brian, Melody, Azomonas, Ellie, University Greens, Cynthia, John, Ashley, Peter, Cathrine, Melvin, OrangeJulian, Porter, Grif, Jules, Joan, Les, Marabeth, Ali, Margaret, Southside Plants, Robert, Keiko, Bryce, Brittany, Helen, Amanda, Mikey, Rhiannon, Michelle, Kate, German, Joerg, Alejandra, Cathy, Jordan, Judy, Steve, Kae, Carole, Mr. Keith Santner, Dana, Chloe, Aaron, Sara, Kenned, Vaibhav, Kendall, Christina, Brett, Jocelyn, Kathleen, Ethan, Kaylee, Runaway Goldfish, Ryan, Donica, Chris, Shamora, Alana, Laura, Alice, Sarah, Rachel, Joanna, Griff, Philip, Paul, Matthew, Clark, Bobby, Kate, Steven, Brittney, McMansion Hell, Joey, Catherine, Brandon, Hall, Vegreville Creek and Wetlands Fund, Kevin, Oliver, John, Johansson, Christina, Jared, Hannah, Katy Pye, Brandon, Gwen, Carly, Stephen, Botanical Tours, Moonwort Studios, Liba, Mohsin Kazmi Takes Pictures, doeg, Clifton, Stephanie, Benjamin, Eli, Rachael, Plant By Design, Philip, Brent, Ron, Tim, Homestead Brooklyn, Brodie, Kevin, Sophia, Mark, Rens, Bendix, Irene, Holly, Caitlin, Manuel, Jennifer, Sara, and Margie.

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the In Defense of Plants Podcast, the official podcast of Indefensiveplants.com. What's up? This is your host, Matt. Welcome to the show. How's everyone doing this week? I personally am doing great because officially my book will be released on Tuesday. I know some people have gotten early copies, and that's really exciting. I think it was a flub on Amazon's part, but I'd rather them come early than late. But yes, my book, In Defense of Plants, an Exploration into the Wonder of Plants, will be released on Tuesday for everyone to read. Thank you so much to everyone that preordered it. It is available wherever books are sold. I even have some copies on my own website. You can get signed copies, get them directly from the source, so you

don't have to worry about supporting large corporate entities. But trust me, it will be in indie

bookstores and a lot of great places. Just find your favorite, pick it, and pick it up if you

0:46.3

would like. For those that are currently reading it, I hope you're enjoying it, and consider

0:50.9

giving it a positive review wherever you bought it from. But today's episode

0:55.2

is going to be kind of devoted to the book just because why not? It's a big milestone,

1:00.0

and I'm really proud of it, and I hope this episode is entertaining because it's really

1:04.8

about the process of writing a book, the thought of science communication, and what it takes

1:09.5

to be effective at that.

1:11.4

And so I couldn't think of a better way to do this than to bring in one of my best buds

1:15.9

of all time, Bill Michael Eck from the Field Guides podcast.

1:20.0

Bill is an educator and a science communicator extraordinaire.

1:24.4

He is a lover of natural history, and I owe a lot of my own personal development

1:28.3

into the world of nature and natural history to Bill and all of our friend group. So Bill

1:34.0

agreed to come on and interview me for a change. So this whole conversation you're about to hear

1:38.5

is about sort of the process of writing the book, what it's all about, what I learned during

1:42.4

the way, some advice for people that are thinking

1:44.7

about writing, and just reflections on effective science communication in general. Bill's just

1:50.0

such a great human being, and I really appreciate him taking time out of his schedule to talk

1:54.0

with me and do this. And I would be remiss if I did not tell you to go subscribe and listen to

1:59.3

the field guides podcast. It's one of my

2:01.1

favorite podcasts of all time. It's hilarious and I learn a ton of stuff with every episode. So shout
