Summary

Oaks (genus Quercus) are among the most culturally and ecologically important trees wherever they are native, which is what makes the next sentence so alarmingly depressing. The IUCN currently estimates that nearly 41% of all oak species are of conservation concern. From all out habitat destruction to invasive pests and diseases, there seems to be no end to the threats oaks face. But that doesn't mean people aren't trying to do something about it. In this episode, I sit down with Director of Global Tree Conservation at The Morton Arboretum, Dr. Murphy Westwood to talk about the Global Conservation Consortium for Oak. Because acorns don't lend well to seed banking efforts, the Global Conservation Consortium for Oak is developing numerous avenues to conserve and restore oak species around the world. Join us for a hopeful discussion about the problems oaks face and some of the solutions needed to save them. How's everyone doing this week?

0:36.4

I just want to say thank you to

0:37.8

everyone that's pre-ordered my book so far. You have made it number one on multiple lists in terms of new

releases on Amazon, but I do want to mention there are other options if you do not want to go through

0:48.3

Amazon to order the book. From what I've been told, Bookshop is a great alternative because

it helps support independent bookstores a lot more than any of the other box stores do. So if you want to get your hands on the book and go through an ethical source, or really any source, it all helps me to be honest. Just make sure you check the show notes because I put up links on pre-order info. Thanks again if you picked one up. I really appreciate it. But today, I'm really excited for

this incredibly important conversation. If you've been following my social media accounts over the

to understand the diversity of species, which isn't too easy, considering it's a pretty

diverse group of trees. Unfortunately, it it's a pretty diverse group of trees.

1:28.4

Unfortunately, it's also a really threatened group of trees.
