Summary

In a brief Labor Day message, longtime union member Michael Moore (currently on strike with his fellow writers and actors) salutes the work that you all do, offers his support for the autoworkers who may go on strike in September, and thanks Turner Classic Movies, a channel on everyone’s basic cable, for having a special prime time Labor Day double feature on Monday night: At 8pm ET Barbara Kopple’s Oscar-winning “Harlan County, USA”, and at 10pm ET, his very first film from 1989, “Roger & Me”.

We hope you get to watch both of these and let your friends and family know about them. Both documentaries have been selected by the Library of Congress’ National Film Preservation Board as groundbreaking films that the Library and Congress will protect for future generations.

Solidarity forever!

Hello, everyone. This is Rumble with Michael Moore. I am Michael Moore. A little music

0:18.7

there from my very first movie, Roger and me. Happy Labor Day weekend. I've decided

0:26.8

I'm going to keep this short today because it is a holiday weekend. I probably should not

0:33.2

be doing any work on Labor Day weekend, but I just wanted to say a few words to you about

0:39.0

this particular weekend, this particular day, this holiday. Tell you about something special

0:44.4

that's happening tomorrow night on National Television. I am a member of three unions,

0:51.4

the Director's Guild of America, the Writer's Guild of America, and the Screen Actors Guild.

0:56.8

And two of those unions, we are currently on strike right now. I've talked to a little

1:02.4

bit about this over the past few months. It is Drag Don, studios and the networks and

1:11.8

streamers. Just like most entities, I guess, don't want to part with their money. And this

1:19.7

really isn't so much. These aren't strikes about, oh, we want more money. This is more

1:24.7

about getting everything aligned so that the new entities agree to the same working conditions

1:32.2

and the same pay that the old guard have been paying for seven or eight decades. There's

1:40.6

not a lot really being asked here, so which makes it even more surprising that it has gone

1:45.3

on this long. Nonetheless, the writers and the actors remain together on this. And I think

1:58.3

all of us would like to get back to making our films and television shows. I don't think

2:04.2

have ever been out on strike on Labor Day weekend. I guess there's a certain irony to that,

2:10.9

but it's not really irony is it? It is the power that we hold in our hands because we provide

2:19.4

the labor. We provide the, in this case, the creativity and the stories. And I think all of us

2:29.2

look forward to getting back to work as soon as possible. But on this Labor Day and Labor

2:34.0

weekend, I just wanted to say a few words about not just the unions I belong to and all of you

2:42.3

out there and most of you probably don't belong to a union. It's been a tough go for the last few
