everything secure. On a perfectly peaceful and quiet night of March 6th, 1935, Francis Johnson was

making his rounds as the sole security guard at the Croydon Aerodome in South London. It was the

only international airport in London, and as such, large amounts

of cargo, mail, and gold passed through the facility. On the evening of the six, three

boxes of gold, bound for Paris and Belgium, had been transferred to a strong room at the Imperial

airwaves earlier in the day. There was a set of keys in the

superintendent's locked drawer, and Francis Johnson had the second set. Francis was awakened at

4 a.m. by an arriving German airplane, and he promptly walked past the vault, which at the time

was locked, in order to greet the German plane.

A few hours later, the vault was found to be unlocked,

and 21,000 pounds worth of gold bullion, gold sovereigns,

and American Eagles, entrusted to the Imperial Airways, was missing.

In today's money, that's around one and a half million pounds. The police investigation discovered that a cyclist passing by in the early hours of the morning had noted the number

plate of a taxi that was suspected to have been used in the robbery. This led the police to
