actually very old way to say left and right.

We'll give you the reason behind that. You're going to hear a story from Victoria

Rival about Anne Bonnie, one of the most famous pirates who happened to be a woman.

Port and Starboard.

These are two words you may or may not know. It probably depends on how much time you've spent on a boat.

If you do know how to find the starboard and port sides of a boat, that's great.

Nice work.

But have you ever wondered exactly why sailors use these

words and not oh I don't know right and left? Port and starboard are nautical

terms. They are references that all sailors use and understand for direction on a boat.

Now the first thing we need to know is that the front of a boat is called the bow, and the rear is called the stern.

Picture yourself on a boat in the wide open waters of the Pacific facing the bow,

the front of the boat.

Maybe it's raining. You're trying to keep your balance. facing the bow, the front of the boat.
