I first met Evo Daldor when he was a highly regarded U.S. representative to NATO.

He has a long history in national security, both as a member of the National Security Council

and the State Department and as an author and a scholar.

Now he heads the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and I sat down with him the other day to

talk about U.S. policy towards Syria, North Korea, and some of the other hot spots around the world.

Evo Daldor, welcome.

You know there's been a lot of talk about immigration lately. You aren't immigrant.

I mentioned you before the show. You have all of these very, very impressive, academic,

diplomatic credentials, but not a lot has been written about your early life which took place in

Europe. Yeah, no, I am. And immigrant came here.

To graduate school and met my wife, married her for a green card, and 31 years later we're

still married. As we said, there's the immigration system working. Exactly.

But talk about your family and your early life.

So I grew up in Holland. Dutch parents. My father was an academic.

Non-Jewish, my mother was Jewish. They're both war generation people. They went through to war.

My father was in northern Holland during the war, which was not liberated until 1945 and went

through the worst winter, 44-45. More people died in that. Did he talk to you about that? A lot.

The war was very vivid in an occupation and living through the occupation. My parents were 12 when

the war started, 17, 18 when the war ended. So they're teenage years. They spent through all that time

there. And your mother lost a lot of her family? My mother was Jewish and spent the first two years of
