Summary
What do cashews (Anacardium spp.), mangoes (Mangifera spp.), pistachios (Pistacia spp.), and poison ivy (Toxicodendron spp.) have in common? They are all members of the family Anacardiaceae! In this episode, I sit down with Deputy Executive Director at the United States Botanic Garden, Dr. Susan Pell, who has devoted her career to understanding this incredible and surprisingly diverse family. Join us as we discuss everything from their evolutionary relationships to the remarkable ways in which some members of this family defend themselves against microbes. | 0:00.0 | Hello everyone and welcome to the In Defensive Plants podcast, the official podcast of |
| 0:05.6 | Indefensibleplants.com. What's up? This is your host, Matt. Welcome to the show. How's everyone doing |
| 0:09.8 | this week? I want to start off this episode with a big announcement. I am very excited to report that I |
| 0:16.5 | wrote a book, and it will be coming out February 16th, 2021. It's published by Mango Publishing, |
| 0:23.4 | and it's entitled In Defense of Plants, an Exploration into the Wonder of Plants. And it's a |
| 0:28.6 | culmination of just years of blogging and thinking about plant ecology and evolution from the |
| 0:33.1 | plant's perspective. This is going to be very similar to what you read in the blog, a very deep |
| 0:37.3 | dive, |
| 0:37.7 | focusing on plants rather than our uses for them. I'm really excited for you to read this. |
| 0:42.6 | So stay tuned. But for right now, you can head over to endoffensiveplants.com. Just check out |
| 0:46.9 | the homepage where I have way more information available on the book and where you can |
| 0:50.9 | pre-order it. Pre-orders can start now. Of course, you can purchase the book when it comes out, but stay tuned for more about that. |
| 0:58.4 | All right, today I'm really excited for my conversation because it's with Dr. Susan Pell. |
| 1:03.6 | Dr. Pell is the Deputy Executive Director of the United States Botanical Garden. |
| 1:07.9 | Her specialty is the Cashew family, Anacardi A.C.E., which gives us other |
| 1:12.3 | delicious fruits, such as mangoes and pistachios, but also species like poison ivy, poison oak, |
| 1:17.9 | and poison sumac. Today's episode really focuses on this plant family as a whole, not any of the |
| 1:23.6 | members in particular, and it ranges far outside of the realm of just eurychral and |
| 1:29.3 | the contact dermatitis some of these plants can give us. It's really interesting research, |
| 1:33.7 | and it's an incredible group of plants, especially when you consider their diversity, their |
| 1:37.5 | biogeography, and all the interesting ecological interactions they uphold. But if this episode |
| 1:43.2 | isn't enough for you and you'd want to learn more about it, I recommend you make sure you're subscribed to this podcast will kill you because we have a crossover episode coming out on Tuesday of this week that takes a deeper look at some of the topics we discuss in this episode. So make sure, like I said, you're subscribed to their podcasts and check out that conversation when it comes out this week. |
