Summary

Invasive species are second only to habitat destruction in causing loss of biodiversity on this planet. Moving one species to a habitat where it didn't evolve or even giving native species a new advantage can cause ripples that spread throughout the entire ecosystem. Returning to the podcast to talk about these issues is plant pathologist, Dr. Kristin Wickert. Join us and learn about the myriad ways invasive species affects the environments on which all life relies. Today we're talking about

invasive species. And this is a topic that I've seen become incredibly politicized in the common

0:44.8

discourse going on, especially on the internet. It's a complicated issue, no doubt. And we certainly

0:50.4

have to learn how to pick and choose our battles when it comes to invasive species, but this is a science podcast and you cannot deny data, especially when it tells you that

invasive species are second only to habitat destruction in terms of driving extinctions on this

planet. There is plenty of evidence that we humans are driving yet another mass extinction

on this planet and our

1:11.7

propensity for moving species around the globe and introducing them into ecosystems in which they

have no co-evolutionary history with any of the other organisms is helping drive a lot of that.

1:21.1

In fact, even native species can become invasive when their checks and balances have been

removed. Disturbance is one of those cases.

You see it all the time when native species that really thrive under disturbance do extremely well
