in order to understand the history of any human events,

you have to look for the bright spots against the darkness.

That's what people mean when they talk about context.

And I'm going to argue in a second,

the context of human history is suffering.

There is no such thing as a civilization

that has not come into being through pain and suffering

and struggle and a little bit of violence.

But in order to understand what the history of a moment is,

you have to look for the bright spots

against the dark background of human nature.

This is the most canceled holiday for a number of reasons,

for a thousand thousand reasons.

First of all, this year, coronavirus

to meet with your friends and family
