On October 28, 1943, a young sailor named Carl Allen was serving aboard a cargo ship docked in a Philadelphia shipyard.

From Allen's position on the ship's deck, he had a clear view of a neighboring vessel, the USS Eldridge.

Alan knew the Navy was up to something unusual with the Eldridge.

The massive destroyer was covered with the electrical cables

and other high-tech equipment that looked out of place on a warship.

Something about this scene made Alan feel uneasy.

Just as the sun began setting along the horizon,

a dense green fog began to envelop the USS Eldridge.

Alan had to rub his eyes to make sure they weren't playing tricks on him.

The Eldridge began to appear as if it were fading in and out of existence,

like someone was flicking a light switch on and off.

This flickering grew more rapid before it culminated in a brilliant flash of light.

Then, when Alan's vision cleared, he realized the ship was gone.

According to some versions of this story, at the same moment the USS Eldridge vanished.

It actually teleported 200 miles away and reappeared in another naval shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia.

Minutes later had vanished again, only to reappear once more, right back where it started from in Philadelphia. But this sudden reappearance of the vessel also brought with it a horrific

chorus of blood-curdling screams. Alan could see dozens of sailors, all screaming in agony,

but that wasn't the real horror of it, because several of the men had somehow become fused with the ship itself.
