Summary

America's most beloved ice cream makers, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield met up with Michael on the campaign trail in Fairfield, Iowa. They discussed how the Vermont duo built their business while maintaining their values, dead peasant insurance, where their ice cream flavor ideas came from and their support for fellow Vermonter Bernie Sanders.

This is Rumble and this is Michael Moore and this is Rumble with Michael Moore. I am traveling with Ben and Jerry, the Ben and Jerry of Ben and Jerry's and they are supporters and long time friends from Vermont of Bernie Sanders and we spent the first part of the afternoon doing a Ben and Jerry's ice cream social for Bernie at the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Hall in Atomwa.

0:29.0

Atomwa, Iowa, which was great with all these union workers. And now we are in Fairfield, Iowa, at a town where I guess if you google this town, it is most famous for David Lynch and the Transcendental Meditation people who set up a big TM center to learn how to meditate and get behind the idea of meditation in our schools.

0:55.0

So we are here with the townspeople of Fairfield. I don't know how many of them are meditating but they look like a nice group. We just had a wonderful time with them, we served up some ice cream. Now I am backstage here waiting for Ben and Jerry and before we get to them I don't want to just tell you that the underwriters of today's episode of Rumble, I really want to thank for supporting me and supporting this show. It is Nat Geo. I think we used to call them National Geo.

1:24.0

National Geographic Magazine, National Geographic Films. Oh my God, how long has National Geographic been with us for more than 100 years, maybe 150 years?

1:36.0

I mean this is one of the oldest magazines in America and now they do all this great work making documentaries and many of my friends have made documentaries with them and they are just a fine, fine group to work with and they have this film that is nominated for the Oscars in just a week or two.

1:54.0

The film is called The Cave. It is made by a wonderful filmmaker, Farros Fyad is his name and he made a film that was nominated. I don't know if it was last year or the year before, Last Man in a Lapo. He has covered this tragic, tragic war in Syria for many years now and this most recent film of his The Cave is a powerful look at a sort of a makeshift hospital.

2:21.0

Yes, I can say it makeshift because they are trying to operate a hospital in the middle of a war and it is the first hospital in Syria really ever to be run directed by a woman.

2:33.0

So it is a great documentary if you get a chance to see it and I think the filmmakers and I think Nat Geo for Underwriting today's episode here on the road.

2:45.0

Of course, their underwriting implies no solicitation or sponsorship of the candidate that I happen to be a traveling with here.

2:57.0

They are completely apolitical organization but they give voice to a lot of people who don't have a voice and I am eternally grateful for that.

3:15.0

We are rolling here. You are listening to Rumble with Michael Moore. I am Michael Moore. We are on the road here with the Sanders campaign.

3:27.0

We are a satellite version now. We have been kind of split off from the main mainly because our leader is Gary Dutie.

3:35.0

Oh yeah, yeah. We are a rogue operation.

3:41.0

4:34.0

Our voices need to be heard on a mission from the heavens. The gods of ice cream. Yes, that has been calling you just heard of that in juries.

4:44.0

The unusually modest then. Yes, and the realistically modest Jerry Greenfield and Michael. Hey, great. So we did a couple of towns here today. The three of us.

4:59.0

Yep. Yeah, as I introduce us, the two guys who invented the modern ice cream known as Ben and Jerry's two guys from Vermont who make ice cream and one guy from Michigan who eats ice cream.

5:13.0

And you do a good job of it. Yes, we appreciate. I, I, I, I, in the old days, I used to do even a much better. If you could use a better job of eating it for Ben and Jerry's.

5:24.0

We were always Vermont's finest on natural ice cream, but there was a little asterisk and it said except for Heath bars because we just really love them too much.
