Hey everybody, Tom Woods here. It's episode 2676 at the Tom Woods show. And I'm very glad to be talking to Jeff Degner today. Jeffrey Degner is a guy I just met last week at the Meesa Institute. And I read his book that you'll see on the screen right here, inflation and the family, monetary policies impact on household life. He is Dean of the School

0:41.3

of Business and Innovation and a professor of economics at Cornerstone University. And Jeff,

0:46.2

let me just say a couple of things about this. Well, in fact, the context for this is in a sense that

0:52.4

last week, beginning of last week, we kicked off the Mises

0:55.6

University program at the Mises Institute, and I was the opening speaker. And one of the points I was

1:00.5

making was that I can understand some of the criticisms that, let's say, Trumpian influencers might

1:08.1

have of a certain kind of economist, who really is obsessed with GDP and everything

1:13.7

has to be subject to that and all we care about is this number on a chart. But most of us aren't that

1:19.4

way, or at least a lot of us aren't that way. And I think the pendulum has swung too far in the direction

1:24.5

of the economists or a bunch of dumb-dums who focus on dumb things when

1:28.9

we have all these existential issues at stake and, you know, why don't they understand that they

1:33.9

need to focus on this and that and the other thing? And I've just had enough of that. And the point

1:37.7

of my talk was that, you know, if you really do care about the things you say you care about,

1:43.2

you're going to achieve your goals much,

1:46.1

much better if you learn what good economists have to teach you. And if you don't, you're either

1:51.8

going to get in your own way, or it's going to be a lot slower, or you're going to be at cross

1:56.1

purposes with yourself. And it so happens that you have this book that amplifies everything I was trying to

2:02.7

say, which is that if you're concerned about family life, their instincts these days are, well,

2:07.6

we'll just have right-wing social policy instead of left-wing social policy. Well, how about

2:12.2

undoing the bad things you're doing now? That's the lowest hanging fruit of all. So anyway,
