Summary

Today we are peeling back blockchain's "layer 2" with Kevin Wang of Nervos Network. It is the way our beloved crypto networks will try to tackle the throughput problem, until blockchain can reach the same speeds as the Visa Network some day. Researcher and co-founder of Nervos, Kevin Wang takes us on a ride into the future. We learn about State channels and side chains. We also take a look at security, decentralization and performance tradeoffs when creating and scaling a blockchain. We also take a look at tradeoffs between block size, block times, etc. We cover lots of info about miners and securing the network, and the game theory behind mining. This episode got a lot more technical than most of our episodes, but it will be something fresh for everyone to listen to and learn about. Last week I was in Maui. was delightful I met many many many great people

0:24.6

reconnected with some old friends it was a it was a best friend's wedding so we just celebrated

0:29.6

all week you know we recorded a couple podcasts we just stayed up to date with the trends

0:34.5

and with the news but today we are joined by Kevin Wang, who is a,

0:40.8

so Kevin is an expert in particularly crypto economics and scaling blockchain. So I'm particularly

0:47.3

excited about this episode because, you know, we're going to really peel back what it means to

0:52.9

scale a blockchain. You know, we're going to look at state channels and side chains. But moreover, we're going to really peel back what it means to scale a blockchain. You know, we're

0:54.2

going to look at state channels and side chains. But moreover, we're really going to look at the

0:58.8

tradeoffs in performance, decentralization, and security when deciding a methodology of

1:05.9

scaling a blockchain. And for those of you that maybe aren't familiar with the idea of scaling

1:09.8

a blockchain, it just means how are we going to get, you know, high throughput where we could transfer not seven

1:15.3

transactions a second, but, you know, 7,000 transactions a second and really get this really

1:20.1

robust network that could handle a lot of, a lot of throughput. So there's lots of, lots of, lots of

1:27.2

computer science tradeoffs that go into

1:29.1

this. So we're going to break it down. We're going to give you the 101. You know, if you've ever

1:33.6

wondered what kind of data is stored in a block, if you've ever wondered what it takes for a

1:37.8

blockchain to be decentralized technologically, this is really going to be the episode for you.

1:42.1

You know, we're going to break down layer two

1:44.3

in regards to state channels and side chains. So, so there's a lot to cover. And Kevin does a

1:50.5

really good job of breaking it down. And real quick, before we get to introduce our guest, Kevin,
