And I wanted to talk to him about what's happening in Syria, hoping that a lay audience

that doesn't have a huge background in the history of that area can nevertheless get a handle

happening there, particularly over the past few months. First of all, Will, welcome to the show.

Hey, thanks, Tom. I appreciate the invite. Now, tell me, I understand you recently took a trip over

there. So when was that? How long? And what was the nature of the trip?

So part of my work for the cradle, I was in Beirut, Lebanon during the war between

Hezbollah and Israel this last fall. And then, of course, it came as a surprise, but the Syrian

government fell in early December. And due to the chaos, the borders were just open.

So I was right there in Beirut.

And so I just went across the border and I was in Syria for about two months.

And I just got home about two weeks ago.

So I had a chance, really amazing chance to travel through most of the country and just to

talk to a lot of people about things that happened during the war that started in 2011 and ended

in about 2018. And then obviously, it was able to see and talk to people about what had just

happened a few months ago. So it was a great opportunity.
