some time, and that is Gladden Pappin, who was a Harvard guy, but for the life of me, I can't remember

how you and I met but you were there well you're

a young lad compared to me you were there much later but he got his degree in history as

I did from Harvard and undergraduate but also a PhD in government.

And he is president of the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs as well as co-founder

and deputy editor of American Affairs as co-founder and deputy editor of American Affairs

and co-founder of post-liberal order.

Gladden, how's it possible for a native-born American to be president of the

Hungarian Institute of International Affairs.

Well, you know, life takes strange turns and I have always been interested in the exchange

between American and European Conservatives broadly and the political exchange

between the American right, if you want to call it that and the European right.

There's just a lot of interesting ideas on both sides and

ferment that can occur and should occur and a lot more of it has occurred within the

last 10 years. Well, around 20-20 at that point you've had a Hungarian conservative government for 10 years under Prime Minister of

Victor Orban, and they took the step of building a lot of institutions that will broadly support the mission of the country.

And one of those educational institutions, the Mathias Corvinus Collegium, it's kind of like a highly selective extracurricular college, like a supplementary college, started inviting a lot of us conservative types over and I went over in December of 2020 in the midst of a raging pandemic and met group of people who were really determined to save at least one country in Europe and I found that very inspiring and decided to stick around initially as a visitor and then a year ago they asked me to lead the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs that's basically

an official foreign policy think tank of Hungary and well Hungary has an interesting place in the world, role in the world, and I can't think of a more exciting place to be.

So, well, I would say if I were trying to gauge fashionable opinion in Europe and the United States.
