Ryan Cal Callahan. An employee with the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources was sent to the ICU last week

after he got hit with a tranquilizer dart meant for an elk. The man's name has not been released,

but the West Virginia Metro News reports that the gun's double safety feature failed as the man was getting into a truck.

He was not holding the gas-powered gun at the time, it darted him, and it's unclear exactly what happened he was flown to a hospital in

Nashville and is expected to be okay the man was part of a project by the West

Virginia DNR to reintroduce elk the state. The DNR has been importing Elk

from other states since 2016 and the latest shipment from Kentucky should number about 40 animals.

That would be a big boost to the state's current population,

which is hovering around 100.
