Hi everybody, welcome to another episode of the Tom Wood show this is episode

2426 and I'm delighted to welcome back our old friend Jay Bodacharya who is

not only professor of medicine at Stanford University, and not only quite

unwilling, I suppose, or let's say quite unexpected, participants on the national stage all of a sudden

are under very very unusual conditions but Jay you are an interdisciplinary

kind of

the scholar of the sort of whom we needed many over the past few years but had sadly few.

I have a background in medicine of course but I also have a PhD in economics

and I have to say like in the early days the pandemic it was striking how unfriendly the

environment was for anyone who had a background in economics unless you supported

lockdowns. Then you were invited. Otherwise you were some monster that was prioritizing

economy over lives. Even as you were saying look from just a straight

epidemiological point of view, public health point of view, the lockdowns are

harming people, hurting lives.

There was always this, what I thought was a false dichotomy from the beginning.

It was a caricature of what people like you and me were saying, that on the one hand some people were concerned about

human life and other people were concerned about quote the economy. Now first of

all that isn't true at all I was concerned about overall health from a bird's eye view that there are more concerns than just one thing,

but also the economy is not just the stock market or greedy profit-seeking people.
