In this episode of Here and Now:

  • Dealing with a slightly wild audience, Ram Dass answers questions about how our actions can influence other people’s journey of awakening, what commitment truly is, and how to look at our predicament from different levels.
  • But what Ram Dass really wants to talk about is three things: God, sex, and dope. He talks about moving beyond the desire for drugs, how people become attached to their sexual expression and what tantra truly is, and defines God to the best of his ability.
  • Ram Dass ends the evening by singing, “Rejoice in the Lord.” Again, I say, rejoice.

Beyond all of the patterns of energy – physical, astral, causal – lies God, that which is beyond form. You aim for that, and in the course of it, if you are pure in your aim, you can do nothing which is adharmic, going against the dharma. And if you stay in the flow, in the Tao, in the dharma, then whatever needs to be for you and your fellow human being will be done, even though you may not understand what it is that’s happening to you. Your intellectual awareness of what is going on is not necessary for this journey. It can speed it up and help it, but it’s not necessary.” – Ram Dass

And by the end, the crowd is getting a little rowdy

and Ram Doss brings in some firmness so that he can get to the topics

0:56.1

he wants to cover, which is God, sex, and drugs. First, what great topics, right?

1:03.0

And second, I don't know exactly how to introduce this one.

I used to work at this inter-spiritual church, and one of the things I really loved about it, which

1:15.3

drew me and so many other people to it, was that we were invited to bring everything to the

1:21.8

altar. Sex, drugs, bad jokes, joy, pain, all of it was

1:28.0

considered part of the Holy. In fact, the idea was that life only goes wrong when we stop bringing everything to the altar,

1:38.5

which in my mind made it a very tantric church, tantra in the sense of weaving the holy into the mundane,

1:47.0

recognizing that the two are not really separate.

And, you know, Tondra in the idea of working with energies, that these energies are just all the ways that we get to God.

2:01.0

And I don't know if you know, but the etymology of Tantra simply means to weave or to expand.

2:07.3

And it's this huge body of knowledge on everything from how to raise Kundalini to saving money and it's thousands of years old and

2:16.0

it's the path of the householder and unfortunately somehow it got reduced in

2:21.1

many of our minds to this method for having good sex or better orgasms.

2:26.2

And to me, that's really a disservice to this incredible wisdom and body of knowledge, which is part of what he talks about here, this path of Tundra.
