The late Mr. Rafael had left me a legacy on the condition that I solved a mystery, the brutal

murder of a young woman, Verity Hunt, for which his son was serving a life sentence.

But then there was another death, that of the girl's head mistress Elizabeth Temple, and

that too looked very like murder. And there was the strange disappearance of another young girl, nor

abroad to be accounted for.

The sisters at the old manor house where for a while Verity Hunt had lived had invited me

to stay with them again, and I had accepted, for I believed that somewhere in that place

might lie the solution to the mystery.
