Summary

00:00:00 - This week Abe and Ryan  joined by Dr. Dave McGarvie to get an update on what's going on with those pesky Icelandic volcanoes that seem to keep threatening air travel. What's the deal there, Dave?

00:24:10 - One way to stay cool around hot lava is a drink. Sure, maybe not a flammable one, but that's what the segment is about regardless. Dave is enjoying some Laphroaigh Scotch Whisky but can't help but mention his favorite themed coffee Hot Java Lava. Abe, to ingratiate himself to our guest, enjoys a Full Bore Scotch Ale from Devil's Canyon Brewing Co. And since this was recorded some time ago, Ryan toasts the holidays with a Hanukkah, Chanukah limited edition release from Shmaltz Brewing Company.

The discussion flows as seamlessly as magma back into more volcano talk, but also science news reporting and outreach. Be sure to check out Dave's blog and Twitter feed for the unfiltered on what's really happening on everyone's favorite north Atlantic hotspot!

01:20:41 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like eruptions, unpredictable but inevitable. Abe informs us all of a new recurring donation started by Chunk, who uses his powers to try and embarrass Ryan. Thanks, Chunk... sort of. Ryan is stoked to have a new iTunes review from ndesouza22, reigniting the dreaded pronoun game!

Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts!

Welcome to Science Sort of. This is episode 217. Our theme this week is Go with the Flow. We are here to talk about things that are science, things that are sort of science, and things that wish they were science. My name is Ryan joining me. If you figured flow meant volcanoes, then you probably already assumed that joining me is Ahrahampedia.

Uh, howdy guys?

0:39.3

It's, uh, time to be back in the show talking about volcanoes.

0:43.7

Yes, how strange for you, right?

0:45.8

I know.

0:46.8

Well, Abe, uh, Abe's tired of talking about volcanoes in a vacuum, so he brought

0:51.0

along a fellow volcanologist, and we are happy to be joined by Dr. Dave

0:55.0

McGarvey. Hi there. I'm joining you from Scotland and it's a pretty dark night out here but

1:00.7

I've got something warm inside why I've talked about volcanoes. You might be our first Scottish guest.

1:07.7

Well, I feel quite honoured and yeah, it's a cold, cold place up here just

1:12.9

south of Edinburgh. But we have got old volcanoes here, but nothing quite as, as interesting

1:18.0

as what's happening in Iceland at the moment. So I, uh, I don't know if they had told you, but I was

1:22.4

in Iceland recently in September, I think. Yeah. Which was which was interesting because I started hearing reports. People

1:31.2

started saying things like, oh, you're flying through Iceland on your way back from Sweden.

1:35.9

Do you think you're going to make it? Because I started hearing reports of this volcano I couldn't

1:41.5

pronounce that was starting to rumble. And do you want to

1:46.3

maybe talk a little bit about these reports I was hearing? Yeah, it's the basically what happened

1:53.2

in 2010 when EIA FIth Ligl went off is burned into the European memory. And every time there's

1:59.6

a hint of something going on in Iceland you get all this

2:02.5

hyper panic going on over here about oh no not another a year not you know tens of thousands of flights

2:09.8

cancelled and people all over Europe and the media get really quite quite hyper about it all and
