Summary

Episode Description

In this episode, John takes on a question that’s been floating around the public conversation for years — often asked with fear, frustration, or misunderstanding: Is deconstruction a bad thing?

After years of listening to the debate unfold online and in church spaces, it felt like time to finally respond. This conversation is part of our current series tackling some of the most frequently requested topics from listeners — and few have come up as often as this one.

John explores what “deconstruction” actually means, why so many people are drawn to it, and how it’s often mischaracterized by those who haven’t walked through it. From faith crises to intellectual honesty, this episode invites listeners to see deconstruction not as the end of faith, but as a deeply human and often necessary process of growth.

🔍 Topics Covered

  • Why the term “deconstruction” has become controversial
  • How faith communities have responded — and why many get it wrong
  • The philosophical roots of deconstruction (Derrida, Foucault, and beyond)
  • Why deconstruction doesn’t equal destruction
  • The emotional and spiritual side of rethinking belief
  • Rebuilding after the unraveling — what comes next
  • Listener questions: “Can you come back from deconstruction?”

💬 Key Takeaways

  • Deconstruction isn’t rebellion — it’s reflection.
  • Asking hard questions doesn’t destroy faith; it refines it.
  • Healthy faith can withstand curiosity, doubt, and nuance.
  • The goal isn’t to tear down belief, but to let go of what’s untrue so that something more honest can take root.

Oh, church, when did we lose our way?

Welcome to the Deconstructionist podcast. I'm your host, John Williamson, and thanks for coming back and listening to the podcast.

0:19.7

And hopefully you've been enjoying this little series

0:22.2

that I've been working on, most of it based on topics and things that people have asked

0:28.6

about for a very long time over the years. And again, just to reiterate the point, like,

0:34.6

I finally had time to sit down and do them justice, so I felt like

0:37.6

now was a good time to put forward this series, but don't worry, more guests are coming.

0:42.5

And so if you prefer sort of the interview format, don't worry, that is not going anywhere,

0:48.3

and that will be coming back in the coming weeks. But for a long time now, I've watched the

0:53.2

public conversation around

0:54.4

deconstruction unfold. Ever since we started this 10 years ago, we've always felt like

1:00.7

certain people kind of nailed what we felt deconstruction was and certain groups,

1:06.7

not so much. And so, you know, sometimes the conversation unfolds with empathy,

1:12.3

but often with fear, suspicion, or outright dismissal. We encountered that a lot when we first

1:18.1

started, still encounter that today. And so that's why we've always had sort of a love,

1:22.2

hate relationship with the name and felt like we had to defend ourselves and say, no, no, no, no, we don't mean

1:28.5

destruction. We mean deconstruction. And that's why we put the brackets around the D and the E at the

1:34.6

beginning of our name at the suggestion of Rob Bell years ago, because then it forms the word

1:39.9

construction. And that's really part of, part of of deconstruction at least in our opinion and

1:45.0

you'll hear a lot of different theories and a lot of different definitions and way of

1:48.7

defining the term in the public forum especially now 10 years later there's so many more

1:54.6

voices out there in the public YouTube channels TikTok, X, everywhere. And so I want to take the
