For two decades, David Gregory was one of the most familiar faces on broadcast news.

As the White House correspondent for NBC News, he covered the entire Bush administration,

and then had the unenviable task of succeeding the legendary Tim Russell as host of Meet the

Press.

I had many encounters on that show with David during the years that I was working in the

White House.

But in certain ways, we learned more about David and who he was after he left Meet the

Press when he lost that job.

He wrote a book called How's Your Faith about his fuller embrace of Judaism later in life,

and what that meant to him in the face of his setbacks.

David came to the Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago to moderate a panel

on covering Trump, and I sat down with him to talk about his life career and where we

are today.

David Gregory, my friend, I remember, I don't know how many times, being remote, waiting to

go on Meet the Press with you in 10 seconds before the show started thinking, what the hell

am I doing here?

What am I crazy?

Because I had the burdens of speaking for an administration, and you always felt like

you were out on a ledge when you were exposed on those Sunday programs, Meet the Press being

the most obvious example.
