All over this country, there are quiet heroes who do important work that enhance people's

lives and particularly people who need a voice.

And no one fits that description better than John Bowman.

The president of the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law based here in Chicago,

he's waged a 40-year battle in the courts and legislatures on behalf of people living

in poverty and fighting to get out of poverty.

I sat down with John recently in Chicago to talk about the war on poverty that he's waged

over 40 years and where we stand today.

John Bowman, my old friend, it's great to have you here.

We've known each other what, 40 years?

I think so, probably.

Yes, here on the campus of the University of Chicago, we met playing co-ed basketball.

Right.

I didn't always call.

Yes, that was fun.

So, which is right down the street here.

But tell me about, so I know the history after we'll get into it.

Tell me about the history before I know you grew up here in Chicago.

Yeah, I was born in the West suburbs in Melrose Park, grew up in Oak Park.
