Summary

In this episode I share with you the audio of a panel on which I appeared alongside Modern Age editor Dan McCarthy, at an Intercollegiate Studies Institute conference earlier this month. Although a conservative, Dan has much sympathy for the sane strain of libertarianism (represented, I'd like to think, by your host here) and thought it would be a good idea for a room full of conservative students to hear me. They'd never heard a libertarian who wasn't a leftist or a coward, he said.

Hey folks, a lot of your friends believe that deregulation caused the financial crisis of 2008

just as fervently as they believe that lockdowns are the solution to COVID-19.

Hey everybody, Tom Woods here. I've got a pretty darn good one for you today,

0:39.0

and I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get the audio of this, so I did do a little bit of a

0:44.8

summary episode of it last week, but this is so, so much better. I've been talking a little bit

0:50.8

about an event I went to. And I speak at a lot of events, but I was particularly happy with this one

0:55.3

because as I mentioned, I spoke at an intercollegiate studies institute event early this month, February

1:01.3

2022, and it was too an audience that was largely unfamiliar with me, and I kind of like those,

1:06.6

because might as well spread the word, right, beyond the usual quarters. And I had the opportunity

1:12.0

to appear on a panel alongside my old friend Dan McCarthy, whom I have known for a really long time,

1:18.3

probably going on 20 years. And I consider him to be one of the smartest people I know, honestly.

1:26.2

He has a tremendous amount of knowledge on topics that I find interesting. And we were talking about

1:33.2

the recent history, let's say, of the conservative and libertarian movements and the various splintering,

1:39.4

the neo-conservatives, the divisions within libertarianism. But then we spent most of the time

1:45.2

talking about practical issues facing the country and big tech, of course, being one of them and

1:51.6

COVID being another. And I think we had a very good give and take. We don't agree on everything,

1:56.0

and you'll hear that. But Dan's not crazy or unreasonable or uninformed or unsharedable.
