Summary

I recently spoke to a group of young conservatives at an Intercollegiate Studies Institute conference whose impression of libertarianism had largely been formed by our worst representatives. I reassured them that we're not all cowards and leftists, and a very productive discussion ensued.

0:37.6	the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, which occupies an interesting position in the history
0:42.6	of American conservatism and libertarianism.
0:46.0	ISI publishes modern age, for example, and we have Dan McCarthy, the editor of modern age,
0:51.2	on from time to time that was founded in 1957, and that journal has published all kinds of conservative
0:59.8	and traditionalist authors, but also libertarian authors. Marie Rothbard has been published in there,
1:05.2	Rothbard's books have been reviewed in there, I've been published in there, so it's a very
1:09.7	eclectic and interesting scholarly journal. The institute itself was founded in 1953,
1:15.9	but not as the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. It was founded as the Intercollegiate
1:20.5	Society of Individualists, and it was founded by Frank Chauderof. Now, if you know anything about
1:26.4	the history of the libertarian movement, that name will be familiar to you. Chauderof wrote a
1:31.2	number of books, the income tax, root of all evil, being one of them. He also published a newsletter
1:38.0	called Analysis. He was friends with Marie Rothbard. He was very, very much a radical libertarian.
1:44.4	He founded the Intercollegiate Society of Individualists in 1953, and the first president was William
