There are business owners who are able to think in systems and processes.

Setting and enforcing standards comes more naturally for some people.

It's the way they're wired.

Then there are those business owners who look at systems and standards the way an American listens to someone speaking Russian.

intrigued, maybe, and perhaps even wish they could speak that magnificent language themselves,

but it's all foreign to them. Creating and enforcing standards, as well as thinking in systems

is not everybody's strength. I get it. On top of that, businesses are different. Some business

models allow for more clearly defined systems and cut and dry standards.

Lower product variation with higher volumes allows for more predictability and less deviation.

Businesses who have built-to-order custom products have a more difficult time molding their work to fit particular systems.

I understand this. Some of the businesses I manage have less variation. Others, however,

are built to order parts with high levels of volatility. Combined that with layers of dependent

events and you have yourself a jungle. I'll tell you this, though, from first-hand experience,

it is possible to tame the wild in your business, no matter how much volatile variation. Would I say

that every business is worth spending the time on to tame? Not necessarily. Even though every business can be set in order, not every business requires the same amount of effort to do so, or gives the same amount of reward. If you want to maximize your returns, think about the business model you're getting yourself into. But that's a different episode.
