her the reconstruction contract over a long list of older, more established architects, many of whom

were furious to lose the job to a young woman. The man originally tied to the restoration project,

famed architect Stanford White, had been murdered in New York only

months earlier. Tragic for him, but for Julia Morgan, it was an opportunity to prove herself.

Unfortunately, things didn't start smoothly. Julia had expected resistance from contractors,

but she hadn't expected several crews to quit outright the moment that
