Elizabeth says how does hyper normativity work with Americans who do know there is another way of living. We are not Russians or Chinese who have never known real freedom.

1:54.0

Yeah, well, yeah, be careful with Russians on that. I mean, Russians would say they are freer than us. They live under more of a what you call, what do they call it, an autocratic libertarianism.

2:06.0

We're in Russia, you can basically do what you want, as long as it doesn't involve politics. I know that might sound counterintuitive for us in more of the faith-family freedom tradition.

3:06.0

It's termed that Soviet scholars came up with to describe the sentiment or the disposition of Soviet citizens living towards the end of the empire, so the 1970s and 80s, where they all knew it was a farce, they all knew it was a lie.

3:23.0

But because they didn't know any other alternative than politicians lying to them, that their Politburo, their leaders lying to them, they assumed just, it was normal. That lies were normal.

3:36.0

It's called hypernormativity. It's this normalization takes on this whole strange stretched definition based on the fact that they could not conceive of a politics that didn't lie to them. They just simply couldn't.

3:51.0

So, and I saw it. I saw it firsthand. I saw it firsthand. I had lots of friends from behind Bjorn Curtin in 1988 when I first went to Peabody Conservatory Music.
