Summary

In this episode of the Wabi Sabi podcast, I take you deeper into the Japanese beauty rituals I was raised with practices that go far beyond surface-level beauty and into how we live, care for ourselves, and honor our bodies daily. Long before J-Beauty became a trend, these rituals were part of my everyday life, rooted in discipline, mindfulness, and a deep respect for simplicity. I share how true beauty begins with what we nourish ourselves with, how we slow down, and how we care for our skin and spirit with intention. From sencha and mineral-rich foods to bathing rituals, gentle skincare, and the philosophy of doing less, but doing it well...these are the timeless habits that create lasting radiance. This episode is an invitation to return to what actually works. To simplify your routine, reconnect with yourself, and embrace a more grounded, natural approach to beauty that supports you from the inside out. Thank you for listening! x Candice

In honor of AA&HPI month coming up, the Japanese beauty rituals that I grew up with

0:16.1

are nothing new to my family and I from Kishu, Japan, but I wanted to share with you in honor of

0:23.2

this month the rituals that are timeless practices that are rooted in simplicity, discipline,

0:31.1

and really cool self-care. So everybody can actually practice these. They are accessible to all of you. And I really

encourage all of you to start sharing this podcast a lot more with your girlfriends, your guy friends,

0:45.0

anybody who might be interested in better self-care. So long before Jay Beauty became this

0:51.8

global trend and long before Japan has recently become like the hottest,

0:58.5

coolest country to visit, appropriate, to take from. There were rituals that were simply

part of my everyday life in the Kumai family and in all families throughout

1:12.0

Japan. These things weren't labeled as beauty secrets. They weren't anything special. When you are in the

1:18.3

culture, you don't necessarily see how different you are from the rest of the world. I took a lot of

1:24.5

notes when I was a young girl. And these were just practices in the way that we lived.

1:31.1

I grew up watching my mom, my aunts, and my grandmother, and my great aunties follow these quiet, consistent practices.

1:40.3

They were not excessive.

1:42.4

They were not performative like they are today on social media, sadly.

1:47.7

And over time, I began to understand that beauty in Japanese culture isn't something that you

1:53.4

chase or share or tout and it's not about narcissism or your looks. It's about something that you

2:00.4

protect. It's about patience.

2:03.6

And it's about an exquisite beauty to one individual self, like a subtle, clean, and open-minded beauty that a woman can possess.

2:22.0

Sometimes it's in a feeling, so we're not going to be able to truly feel that through a podcast.

But I think if I'm on to the right next steps of my career,
