In episode one, we talked about an open secret.

0:06.0

Scientists have no clue how a brain could create consciousness.

0:11.0

Again, when I say consciousness, I mean that sense of awareness and experiencing that we all have at this very instant.

0:17.0

Larry Dassey, MD, a well-known author and consciousness researcher,

0:22.0

summarized what's known as the hard problem of consciousness in one sentence.

0:27.2

Currently, there is no known hypothesis that can explain how a brain could in fact make consciousness.

0:37.1

Bingo. But we know that the brain has some

0:40.6

relationship with consciousness. The field of neuroscience has taught us that when you

0:44.9

change the brain, your conscious experience changes with it. But remember, just

0:50.4

because two things are related doesn't necessarily mean that one causes the other.

0:55.0

That's the key point.

0:57.0

Today, we're going one step further than that.

1:00.0

The brain is a paradox.

1:01.0

It's obviously playing a role in how we experience the world around us.

1:05.0

Most of neuroscience argues that the brain is creating a consciousness.

1:09.0

But on the show, what we're saying instead is that the brain is a

1:12.0

vehicle that processes or interprets consciousness from outside the body. The brain is not producing

1:20.2

consciousness. Throughout the series, you'll hear us use a bunch of different analogies to

1:26.0

explain the relationship between the brain and consciousness.

1:29.3

Some are more precise than others, and we aren't claiming that any are perfect, but they are starting points.

1:34.3

They all have one key commonality. They help us view consciousness as something that's beyond the brain, and that's the critical point.

1:41.3

Let's start with a really basic analogy. Imagine that your brain is an iPhone.
