The screams had finally stopped, or at least people pretended not to hear them.

himself, as if he needed to be convinced. The screams had been echoing inside the castle for days, muffled but distinct, accompanied

by pounding and scratching. It seemed to take forever for them to wane, but they did, as he knew

they would.
