understand how World War III could happen, we should look historically at the closest that the world has

gotten to World War

three since the end of World War II. The world came closest to World War III during the Cuban

missile crisis of 1962 when the Soviet Union attempted to ship nuclear-tipped missiles into Cuba,

and the United States put a blockade around Cuba to prevent just that from happening. Essentially,

the United States and the USSR stood

eye to eyeball and eventually the USSR backed down. That was very, very close. And everybody knows

how close that was. It's become an incredibly famous incident, not only in foreign relations,

but in American history. But to understand why we came so close to the brink of nuclear war in

1962, you actually have to reverse field for a few years.
