I'm CalNewPort and this is DeepQuestJays, episode 193.

0:22.3

I'm here in my deep work, HQ, joined once again after his well-missed absence by my producer, Jesse, Jesse. Welcome back.

0:32.8

Thanks. Good to be back. I hope you're your tournament, the lacrosse tournament for the team you helped coach. I hope that all went well.

0:42.3

Yeah, I went pretty good. I coach at Gonzaga College High School down in Washington, D.C. right next to the Capitol.

0:48.3

We had some ups and downs, but we're trying to play better lacrosse.

0:53.3

Yeah, I mean, I like to imagine, I don't know if this is true, but I get a kick out of imagining that you're coaching philosophy entirely comes out of my books.

1:02.3

Yeah, pretty much. Yeah.

1:04.3

You're out there yelling at your kids enough with all of this hyperactive hive mind ad hoc back and forth unstructured communication on the field. We need communication protocols to avoid all of the cognitive capacity hits from this context switching.

1:22.3

So now here's how it works. If you want to make a pass to the player down by the net, there's a Google Doc.

1:30.3

So you put that you put that in the Google Doc. We can check that when the player down by the net is ready to check it. You're not going to be able to interrupt them and create a context shift. That's the secret to your success.

1:42.3

I assume, but it's my terminology right. The player down by the net. There's probably like a good.

1:46.3

The attack man, the attack man, but especially on defense. So it either goes really well or goes really bad. So the communication is just like on point. Don't give up any goals or just give up like 20.

1:56.3

Well, that's what I mean, I think that's your key is that's going to be especially sometimes that the Google Drive doesn't like, you know, refresh when they come over to the sideline.

2:04.3

Yeah, I mean, look, I then they're lost. I don't want to tell you how to do your business, but I was just I was just scouting St. John's.

2:12.3

The sort of what the number one team in the country this year, right? They are. They're in our league. They're they're good. Yeah. Well, I don't want to give away their secrets. I was scouting them, but I'll give it to you secretly.

2:22.3

Trello boards.

2:24.3

That is how St. John's is dominating. They are using Trello boards to keep track of their different obligations on the field in a way that allows them to attach files and see context quickly.

2:34.3

So look, I don't want to speak out of school, but probably definitely house with recruiting. I'll tell you that.

2:38.3

Yeah, they're like, look, you come here to St. John's and you're not going to be on you're not going to be on slack. We're going to have we're going to have communication protocols and minimize context shifting.

2:48.3

They have a giant picture of me. I don't know if you've seen this in the locker room. There's like a giant picture of me giving double thumbs up and it just says.

2:56.3

Do it for Cal today. Yeah, and they hit it as that, you know, like a Notre Dame. They all hit it as they go out and they get real psyched and.

3:02.3

I'm trying to get Gonzaga to be the only team in America that doesn't use social media, but that's kind of hard to do.
