If you try to stream the movie Gone with the Wind, the great 1939 film, winner of Oscar

for Best Picture and Number of Others, here is the text of just one possible disclaimer

that may confront you.

Gone with the Wind is a product of its time and depicts racial and ethnic prejudices

that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society.

These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.

To create a more just, equitable and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and understand

our history.

This picture is presented as it was originally created.

Now that's the short version.

If you try to watch on HBO, you may be treated to a more than four minutes long video,

contextualizing as they say the racial evils of this terrible film, which

as you may recall was taken off of HBO shortly after John Ridley, who's the screenwriter

for 12 years, a slave, published an op-ed in the LA Times, which they titled,

hey, HBO, Gone with the Wind, romanticizes the horrors of slavery, take it off your

platform now.

So here's a quote from that op-ed, which I must say that's a tremendously petulant headline.

I assume that Ridley didn't actually pick it.

Usually the editor gives the headline, so I don't fault him for that.

But it does sort of encapsulate the whiny attitude involved in this whole thing.

When it is not ignoring the horrors of slavery, wrote Ridley, Gone with the Wind pauses

only to perpetuate some of the most painful stereotypes of people of color.
