Summary

Online bullying and shaming is something I've lived with for the better part of the past 4 years I've spent building Run, Selfie, Repeat but my first experience with it shaped how I view online bullying and shaming for the rest of my life. Today, I'm all about advocating for compassion because regardless of how inexcusable someone's mistakes may be, I don't condone the schadenfreude that surrounds online witch hunts.

I'm serious when I say that I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject. What are your thoughts on the lack of compassion in online comments and message boards? What can we do to make a change?

If you haven't already, take a second to subscribe to this podcast on iTunes or Google Play and, if you're feeling extra generous, I would be beside myself with gratitude if you would give it a 5 star review.

Honestly, I had my first taste of how volatile, vicious, disrespectful, and corrosive online bullying can be in 2009 when my younger brothers got passed away at 16 from acute alcohol poisoning.

As if my unimaginable loss wasn't traumatic enough, my family and I were hounded by the local news

about the story. And while I understand that the news has a job, it was horrible because once the stories went live online,

1:13.3

the comment sections of those stories were,

1:17.4

let's just say they were less than compassionate for the most part.

1:21.4

And a lot of them were.

1:23.0

I think a lot of people understood that the accident was horrifying.

1:29.7

Most of the comments were just terrible, horrifying, awful.

1:34.2

People saying that my brother deserved what happened because he was a stupid jock,

1:38.4

or that my parents should be locked up, that he was neglected,

1:43.3

or that they would never let it happen to their child.

1:47.1

I mean, honestly, every single comment felt like I was being stabbed with a knife, and there was

1:51.5

nothing I could do. My brother was dead, and he couldn't defend himself, and I couldn't defend him,

1:56.7

as hard as I tried. Being subjected to so much disgusting disrespect
