It would have been a quiet night in Limerick had it not been for drunken Thaddy

and his old friend Seamus.

The two men staggered down the road together toward the river Shannon, each leaning heavily

on the other, neither quite certain who was keeping whom upright.

They sang as they walked, loud, off-key, and without much agreement on tempo. Oh, here's good luck to the point, pot, good luck to the barley mo.

When they reached the bridge near the castle, they chose not to cross it.

Instead, they climbed down along the riverbed beneath it, preferring the mud and dark water

to the risk of crossing paths with anyone wearing authority.
