British military surgeon named James Barry. Originally born in Cork, Ireland in 1789,

Barry earned a medical degree from the University of Edinburgh. Then went on to serve a distinguished

career for the British Crown. While working in South Africa, Barry became known for advocating

for improved conditions for wounded soldiers, as well as performing the first successful

cesarean section in Africa. Before retirement, Barry rose to the rank of Inspector General,

the second highest medical office in the British Army, all of which would have made for a remarkable

life on its own. But James Barry had one more secret that stunned the world.
