About Susie Boutry

Blog | Facebook | Instagram | X

Susie has loved reading for as long as she can remember. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend’s blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

Welcome to Sarah's Bookshelves Live. I'm your host, Sarah Dickinson. Join me every other week as we get real and sometimes a bit snarky about books and reading. Let's get rolling. Welcome to our 2024 year-end superlatives

0:23.7

episode. The first episode in our two-part year-in series, part two is the 2024 genre awards,

0:31.2

and that is coming in two weeks. And I've got Susie from novel visits here with me today. Welcome,

0:36.0

Susie. Hi, Sarah. I'm excited to be back. This is always one of the most fun episodes we do all year. Yes, it is. And the most seat of our pants episode. Yes. I should say, which we will make clear why this episode is seat of the pants in just a minute. Before we get to our superlatives today,

0:55.1

I do want to remind you all that the 2025 reading tracker is now available. It launched this

1:02.9

morning for our patrons. And this is a great reason to join the Patreon community. If you've been

1:07.8

considering it, you can make it a holiday gift for yourself. I shared a lot of

1:12.9

detail about the tracker in the episode two weeks ago with Chelsea Beaker, but I wanted to share a bit

1:19.3

of that detail again today, since I know tons of y'all listen to this superlatives episode.

1:25.0

Our big reading tracker is in Microsoft Excel, but it can be uploaded to

1:28.8

and used in Google Sheets. After you enter raw data about the books you've finished and DNFed,

1:35.1

it automatically calculates tons of stats about the books you've read, the types of books that are

1:40.2

most successful for you, diversity stats, your best recommendation sources, and more.

1:45.3

And this year, we added some fun stats related to the New York Times best books of the 21st

1:50.0

Century list that took the book World by Storm this summer. And new for this year, we are also

1:56.2

offering a light version of the tracker. For those who find the larger, more comprehensive trackers,

2:01.6

a bit overwhelming. We heard this in our survey results from patrons, so we know there is a

2:08.0

market for this. The light version includes just the basics and will be in Google sheets,

2:14.3

since we don't need some of the additional functionality that Excel brings.

2:18.5

Becoming a patron gets you access to both the big and the light trackers, and you can use

2:23.3

whichever one works for you, or you can use both. Or you can start with the light and then migrate

2:27.6

to the big tracker if you find you really love this stats thing and you want more. And remember,
