When archaeologists first came across the site in a southeastern turkey known as Gobekli

Tepi, they dismissed it as simply a medieval graveyard.

At the time all that was uncovered were a few broken slabs of limestone that the experts

thought were just gravestones, but nothing could be further from the truth.

In 1994 archaeologist Klaus Schmidt dug deeper into the unassuming hill and made his

discovery that upended not only everything we know about the site, but it also changed

everything we know about ancient people as well.

Many the earth lay a sprawling, megalithic temple, which is now considered to be the oldest

such structure ever discovered.

This temple at Gobekli Tepi is believed to have been built somewhere between 11,000 and

12,000 years ago.
