Summary

Antony Sammeroff, who among many other things does outstanding work as a therapist, discusses the psychological factors that may account for why some of us embrace the hard truths of libertarianism and others don't. We begin with a discussion of Harry Browne's work on finding freedom in an unfree world, and noting that in the case of many libertarians (and indeed human beings), the major problems they face tend to be internal rather than external (i.e., caused by institutions like the state). 0:32.9

the therapy angle of what Anthony does because I think he has some interesting psychological insights

0:38.9

and among them we'll be talking about, for one thing, why maybe there are so few libertarians or

0:45.2

what it is about a particular person that makes it likely that person become a libertarian. What makes

0:50.6

people become libertarians? What makes somebody take on a series of ideas that are frankly despised

0:57.0

by almost everybody? I mean, there has to be some explanation why some people go down this road

1:01.9

and others don't. Now, you could say, well, it's just because the force of the arguments are

1:05.9

just overwhelming, but how come they don't overwhelm everybody? That's really the question that

1:10.7

I want to get answered. But there's a lot more here because a lot of people, and I think I want to

1:16.1

talk about this first, we think about freedom in terms of politics and freedom from the state.

1:22.0

And I think from a libertarian perspective, that is the correct way to think about it. So the

1:26.2

definitions aren't wrong here. But I think nevertheless, when we think about freedom colloquially,

1:32.7

we often think of freedom as simply living freely, living the kind of life you want to live

1:38.6

without annoying constraints, whether political or otherwise. And I think a lot of libertarians,

1:44.4

if they're being honest with themselves, will find that the things they really struggled with in

1:48.5

their lives have nothing to do with the state. And they may not be external things at all.

1:52.9

Having set it up that way, let's turn things over to Anthony Samarov. Anthony, welcome back.
