Highlights:

“Secretary Blinken made it absolutely clear that the Biden administration does not support Taiwan independence, even though they’ve been dropping hints for months now that such a move towards independence would be fully supported by the United States!”

“It does look like President Xi is coming out the winner here and, of course, Biden the loser.”

Hey gang, it's me, Dr. Steve, and we're going to see what just happened in Beijing, and what it all means for the Pacific and here at home.

1:06.0

U.S. Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing to address tensions between the two countries in the course of the meeting, Blinken publicly declared this.

1:18.0

On Taiwan, I read or rated the long-standing U.S. One China policy. That policy has not changed. It's guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the three joint communicates, the six assurances.

1:30.0

We do not support Taiwan independence. We remain opposed to any unilateral changes to the status quo. By either side, we continue to expect the peaceful resolution of cross-state differences.

1:41.0

Well, he just tried to bury that in there, if you'll notice, but the whole world heard it loud and clear.

1:47.0

After months of the Biden's rather bellicose attitude towards China and Taiwan, having what's amounted to a sort of staring contest with President Xi,

1:57.0

well, as you probably guessed, one of them just blanked, and it certainly wasn't President Xi. It was Secretary Blinken making it absolutely clear that the Biden administration does not support Taiwan independence.

2:11.0

Even though they've been dropping hints for months now, that such a move towards independence would be fully supported by the United States.

2:19.0

Now, in terms of context here, historical context, you should know that what the Biden administration is now advocating is actually the default historic policy of the United States towards Taiwan.

2:31.0

If you don't know back in December of 16, 1978, President Jimmy Carter announced that the United States and the People's Republic of China agreed to establish full diplomatic relations, effective January 1, 1979.

2:46.0

Up until that point, the United States refused to recognize the People's Republic of China and instead put their support behind the nationalist Chinese government on the island of Taiwan was formally known as the Republic of China.

2:59.0

But as part of this agreement for full diplomatic relations, the U.S. agreed to recognize what's called a one-China policy, which recognized the People's Republic of China as, quote, the sole legal government of China.

3:14.0

3:37.0

So there's only one China and Taiwan is part of that one China, but the Chinese government does not have political sovereignty over Taiwan.

3:47.0

And so Taiwan's international status today remains radically ambiguous. It's actually referred to technically as a policy of strategic ambiguity.

3:58.0
