We looked at his upbringing in Huai on in Jiangsu province, growing up in a well-off family that had seen better days

than his time spent in Tianjin at Nankai Middle School.

Later Japan, followed by the May 4th Movement, which impacted Joe and everyone else who later on played a starring role in the establishment of the PRC.

From these days in Tianjin, Japan, and then later in France, Joe and Lai became known throughout the communist movement

as someone who knew how to get things done.

Because of his ability, charisma, good looks, and people skills.

He became a leader and someone universally admired for his ability to organize, lead,

teach, and keep cool under sustained pressure.

Joe's education continued on in Europe from 1920 to 1924,

and we saw how his abilities to organize and manage affairs in France got noticed and this led to

his appointment at the Wampoa Military Academy where many of the greatest PLA generals were

his students.
