Welcome back for another episode of Reality Life with Kate Casey.

Now, if you've seen The Wolf of Wall Street, you know exactly who I'm talking about before I even say his name.

It's the 2013 Martin Scorsese film, three hours long, Leonardo DiCaprio at his most unhinged, Jonah Hill with the teeth.

It's the movie where it broke 20-something stockbroker builds an empire out of a strip mall.

And by the end, he's got the yacht, the helicopter, the mansion and the Hamptons, and a closet

full of money that he doesn't even bother to count.

It's the Kwayludes crawl across the country club count. It's the quailudes, crawl across the

country club floor. It's the, I'm not leaving speech to his own office. It's DiCaprio, arms out,

selling you a pen like it's the meaning of life. The movie got three hours of chaos, a best picture

nomination, and turned Jordan Belford into a kind of anti-hero. The guy audiences couldn't help

but root for, but even while he was robbing people blind. That's Jordan Belfort, or at least,

that's the Jordan Belfort that Martin Scorsese sold you in 2013. But here's the real story.

In the late 1980s, a 20-something Belfort started a small brokerage out of a strip mall in Long Island called Straton-Oak-Mont.

Within a few years, it wasn't small anymore.

He built an army of cold callers, trained them to sell garbage penny stocks to people who trusted them,

and pump those stocks up before dumping them and walking away with the

money, while the people on the other end of the phone lost everything. At its peak, Stratton-Ockmont

was pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars. Belfort was buying yachts, helicopters, a mansion,

a wife, a lifestyle built entirely on other people's savings. And it worked until it didn't.

The SEC and the FBI spent years building a case. Belfort eventually flipped on his own

partners, pled guilty to fraud and money laundering, and served 22 months in federal prison. He was
