Summary

Scientists estimate anywhere from eight to fifteen percent of the public suffers from the condition known as sleep paralysis sometime during their lives. Although scientists believe they can explain this strange sensation of waking up feeling paralyzed with fear. The people who suffer this affliction often insist they are being terrorized by evil forces bent on harming them. In this episode I'll tell you about the long history of sleep paralysis, and about the time during the late 1970s and early 80's when 117 otherwise healthy men died in their sleep. 0:37.0	David Hofford was exhausted. During the winter of 1964 David was a young
0:43.1	college student in William's sport, Pennsylvania, and he was having a tough
0:46.8	month. He was just getting over about a mononucleosis. On top of that he had
0:53.1	finals coming up and he was feeling under pressure. One December night he
0:57.9	stumbled his way back to the room he was renting off campus and immediately
1:01.1	climbed into bed and fell into a deep sleep. But about an hour later he was
1:07.5	startled awake by a disturbing noise. It was the sound of his bedroom door
1:12.6	creaking open. Only this should have been impossible because David was
1:17.5	certain he had bolted and locked it before going to bed. David tried to sit
1:22.4	up only that's when he came to another horrifying realization. He couldn't
1:26.7	move a muscle. For some reason, even though he was certain he was awake, David's
1:32.6	entire body was paralyzed. And what was worse? He could now hear the sound of
1:37.8	shuffling footsteps drawing closer to him. David's heart beat furiously in his
1:42.7	chest. He tried to cry out for help only his mouth didn't work either. He was
1:48.7	terrified and on the verge of tears as he suddenly felt a heavy weight press
