I've got a great episode for you today, and I hope that you went back and listened to all of the episodes this week.

On Wednesday, I did an episode about a Hulu and Disney Plus documentary called Abandoned,

and I'm telling you, you're going to talk about it for days to come.

I interviewed the director. And then on Thursday, I did an episode about Love Island behind the scenes,

and if you've been watching that show, or even if you want to get caught up, you've got to

listen to that episode as well. Now, today's episode is about a cult in New Zealand that I have

to tell you about because there are two

different documentaries that you can watch on the subject. And I know that so many of you are

interested in cult documentaries. Number one, it's so interesting about human behavior, but also

the hope that those that are involved have an awakening and they can leave and then build new

lives. This one is, again, called Gloria Vail. So there's this place in New Zealand where

hundreds of people live almost entirely cut off from the outside world. Children are born there,

marriages are arranged there, and most people

never choose to be there. For decades, many New Zealanders barely even knew what happened behind

its gates. Again, the community is called Gloria Vale, and it's a remote settlement on the west

coast of the South Island. It's women wear long blue dresses, high neck and ankle length,

with wide collars and openings that are built into the bodice so they can breastfeed without

undressing. Over their hair, they wear white handkerchiefs. It's tied as a sign of submission

to their husband or father. And it is a look that is so distinct that it has been

cited as a reference point for the costumes in The Handmaid's Tale. The men wear matching blue,
