Summary

Last month Natalie and I took on the Ozark Rando 120. This is a new event by Ozark Gravel Cyclist and hosted by Experience Fayetteville.  As the name suggests, the format of this ride is a Randonneur -a non-competitive long-distance unsupported endurance cycling event.

I used this ride as part of my training for an attempt at the 475 mile Central Texas Showdown Route.  I've also been really interested in doing a Randonneur ever since Cheech with Crust Bikes came on the podcast.  And, I never turn down an opportunity to ride my damn bike in Arkansas!

Natalie on the other hand would be taking on her biggest ride, by a long shot!  Previously, her longest ride was 60 miles in Texas with only 1,200' of climbing.  The Ozark Rando boasts over 12,000' of climbing over 122 miles. For her, this would be a huge physical and mental undertaking. By signing up, she committed to the unknown, and that's scary.

Spoiler alert: We finished Dead Fucking Last, and I couldn't be more proud of her and us. As the day unfolded, the miles passed slower and slower, and the finish time goal post kept moving, but we kept riding our damn bikes.

On today's episode, join Natalie and I as we embark on an epic day (and night) in the Ozarks on our bikes.

Hello, friends, and welcome back to the Bikes for Death podcast. As always, my name is Patrick,

0:05.8

and I'm your host. And on today's episode, you are going to join Natalie and I as we take on the

0:12.2

120 miles of the Ozark Rando. In this case, it was the Ozark Rando 120. This episode is just now coming out because after the Ozark

0:24.9

Rando, I attempted a ITT of the Central Texas Showdown. And because the actual Central Texas

0:33.7

showdown event was taking place right after I finished that. I wanted to get that

0:38.5

episode out for anybody who was going to be participating in that. And then I had to run the

0:43.6

event. And now we're getting back into podcasting mode. And so we're kind of going back in time with

0:48.9

this one and joining Natalie and I in Arkansas on this ride. And today's episode is a little bit long, so I'll try to make

0:57.1

this brief, but I do want to add some context to this episode. For me, this was just a ride.

1:04.1

I wanted to go out and check out this new event. I've been wanting to do a Randonay. And I was also

1:09.7

training for the Central Texas Showdown ITT.

1:12.9

So I signed up and then I tried to convince my girlfriend Natalie to sign up.

1:19.5

And that was a big ask.

1:21.5

So for context, prior to this ride, Natalie's longest ride she'd ever been on with 60 miles and that was in Texas and there was hardly any climbing.

1:31.3

That was like a year ago when we went on that ride or somewhere about there.

1:35.3

And then probably about four or five months ago we went to Arkansas and we rode most of the Lovett Trail, which is a really aggressive epic mountain biking trail. It's literally

1:44.8

called an Emba Epic. That's not just my adjective I'm using there. And that is a super gnarly

1:50.8

trail, very challenging. And she did that. It was hard, but she completed it. The one thing that I

1:56.4

know about Natalie is that she is very tough. And so this Arkansas ride was well outside of her

2:05.4

really even ability to like comprehend what she was signing up for. I definitely tried to give her

2:12.1

as much information as possible like leading up to it. I never want to trick anybody, right?

2:16.9

Like I want to give you as much
